Diabetes management is a confusing, tedious, and manual process for patients, especially when they are newly diagnosed. Moreover, for a product so essential to a patient, current designs do not reflect users' personality. Glucosio is a smartphone case integrated with a built-in glucose meter and lancing device. It pairs up with users’ smartphone via bluetooth to perform tasks such as tracking data, and logging meals. Users can also customise the app to better suit their lifestyle and type of diabetes they have.
Contextual enquiries were carried out with both type 1 and 2 patients to get insights with current way people are using their devices. I also did a "day in a life" practice where I immersed myself in the user's perspective, testing my own blood sugar levels throughout the day. It quickly became apparent that there's a drastic difference in the purpose people use glucose meters for; type 1 patients tend to use the meter to figure out how much insulin is needed, whereas type 2 patients use them to make better diet choices.
